Jan 20, 2006 - Travel to El Calafate, part 1

So this route is the hell that we discovered when researching all the options in El Bolson. To get from El Bolson to El Calafate, a town due south, you have to first cross the entire country to the Atlantic Ocean, travel down the coast for many hours, and then cross back west and north to get to El Calafate. The extra hours this trip takes is part of the reason we had to cancel Futalefu from our plans. But there are simply no other roads that buses travel on. Just one, Route 40, and only a sight-seeing tour bus goes down it charging about three times as much as this other option and still taking as long. This is also the reason we had been looking into buying or renting a car for the 6 of us. But eventually we chose this bus option, and I am making this entry just so I can get the Comodoro Rivadavia spot correctly on the map, to mark exactly how ridiculous this stretch was. We left El Bolson at 5pm on Monday the 20th, had a brief stop in Esquel, and got into Comodoro Rivadavia at 6am on the 21st.

Now go on to part 2...
