Dec 29, 2005 - Through Santiago to Valparaiso, Chile

We arrived in Santiago early in the morning, but for this stopover we had a mission. Harris and I were going to rent a car for the next few days, so that we could drive down to Valparaiso for New Year's, have a car there to explore the surrounding areas, and most importantly come back on time and directly to the airport on January 1st for Harris' flight that night. Yup, we were approaching the home stretch of our time together. So we headed over to the airport to do the rental, that way Harris would already be there when he dropped it off. From there we drove into the city center to stop for an empanada lunch, and we climbed a small rocky hill there that gives you a nice panoramic view. Unfortunately Santiago is one of the most polluted cities in the world, and the amount of smog detracts from what could be a gorgeous view of downtown and the Andes that frame this capital city. After this brief touristy stop, we got back in the car and continued on about an hour to the coast of Chile and the port town of Valparaiso.
