Feb 6, 2006 - Punta Arenas, Chile

Monday morning the four of us got up to go our separate ways. Brian and I had purchased tickets to fly from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires (about the same price as spending 40-50+ hours on a bus), so we were continuing south. But Tanner and Dan did not have these tickets, so they had to start making their way towards Buenos Aires now by bus if they were going to get there in time to meet back up with us in 3 days.

Brian and my next stop was Punta Arenas, another port town and common stopping point for backpackers in the area. We were just passing through for the night though. The typical thing to do here is go on a tour to visit the large penguin colonies that live in the surrounding waters and islands, but we didn`t want to spend the time or money to do so. Another of the Patagonia features that had to be missed this time around. So we got in at about 4pm, and checked into yet another hostel that allowed you to camp in the yard for cheap. We walked all around the town and tried to find something of interest to do or see, but were at a loss for anything. I really don`t get how some people fell in love with this place and stayed for multiple days. In the end we just bought all the food we would need to make sandwiches for our long journey to Ushuaia the next day, and to make a dinner comprised solely of tortilla chips (we were so excited to find these in the supermarket), and a deliciously unhealthy and filling sausage-based dip. Without much more to do, and not the friendliest of people staying in the hostel, we made it an early night and headed to bed.
