| Dec 3, 2005 - Puno, Peru
| Once I left Cusco I started a bit of a rushed stretch of my trip. My friend Harris from High School made the very smart decision to cme visit me during his Christmas break from work and spend New Year's down here in Valporaiso, Chile. So, I have to be in Mendoza, Argentina on the 20th of December where we will rendezvous and start our 10 days of mayhem. This means I do not have as much time in Bolivia as I originally expected. But this is ok for 3 reasons: a)Right now is the rainy season and many roads get closed or the busses delayed since only about 5% of Bolivia's roads are paved. b)The elections for president in Bolivia are on the 18th, and this is usually accompanied by strikes, road blocks, and potentially riots both before and after the elections. c) I am actually going to return to Bolivia around April or May, when there are no eletions or rainy season, and thus a much better time to really travel the country. So really, Harris could not have picked a better time to come visit and make me change my plans even a bit.
Why do I bring this up? Because when I arrived in Puno at 5:30am, which is the main town on the peruvian side of Lake Titicaca, I decided to immediately search out a lake tour for that day and thus speed up my itinierary and start getting a move on. The tours of Lake Titicaca on this side that go for two days include a visit to the amazing floating reed islands, a night spent on the island of Amantani staying with a family that lives there, and then a visit to the island of Taquile on the way back to Puno. I found one that was leaving at 8:30 that same day and would give me a bit of a discount, and since I actually slept rather well on the overnight bus, I decided to go for it.
At this point you can go to the next entry for photos and descriptions of my Lake Titicaca tour. |
