| We had been talking about our celebratory victory dinner since the first steps of our journey through Torres, so we had to go back to the mammoth burger place. We met back up with Remi (from the night at Campo Italiano) and the 5 of us headed out there together. Remi actually got some great photos of us with the meat beasts, but later the CD he saved them to broke before he could send them to me, so unfortunately I can't share that with you. We continued our self-congratulations over large double-scoop two-flavored cones of ice cream. I had mine dipped in magic chocolate, and then went back for single-scoop seconds. Afterwards we all enjoyed our first relaxed night in quite a while, and slept soundly, in actual soft beds. It was glorious.
And then we awoke, to Superbowl Sunday. As a continuation of our victory meals we conjured up the largest of all victory breakfast sandwiches we could think of. I'll let the pictures do the rest of the explaining. We treated ourselves to some hardcore lounging and recovery for the rest of the day, and then Dan, Brian, and I went out in search for victory dinner #2, while Tanner opted for the cheaper route of burgers with Remi. What the three of us found was curanto. We had been looking for a place we could get it, ever since reading the Lonely Planet description of curanto: "a hearty pile of fish, shellfish, chicken, pork, lamb, beef and potato that has all been cooked together." It was completely gluttonous and expectedly brilliant. The plate comes out with a small mountain of massive mussel shells, we guessed about 25 in all. And then draped on the slopes of this mountain is a smoked-meat steak, a piece of chicken, this potato-corn mush concoction, a baked potato, and I think possibly one or two other items I can`t remember now. My instinct was to go striaght for the steak, but it was impossible to cut into it without completely toppling the mussel mountain. So we sat there devouring about 10 shell-fulls each just to make some room on the plate to start carving up the meat. Ahh, it was splendid time indeed.
After the meal it was time to meet back up and go watch the superbowl. There were two bars we knew of in town that were showing it, so we went to one of them first. I have not met a lot of Americans on this trip so far, at least not realtively to some other countries, but I think I saw about 4 times the amount that night than I had in the previous 3 months. We just seemed to come out of nowehere for the superbowl. It made me proud. We watched the game, and returned to our hostel for the night. The next day would be a further breaking up of the group. And oh yeah, congratulation to Tracy P, Harris, and the rest of Steeler Nation out there. Good game. |
