Feb 21, 2006 - Bus ride from hell

Only because I spent so much time singing the praises of my previous bus ride do I feel compelled to give an entry about this one. Coincidentally enough, the best bus ride of my trip was immediately followed by the worst, by far, of my life.

I`ll spare the total horror and give just a few details. First off, there were no services on this bus, in contrast to the last one, absoltuely nothing. The seats barely were even comfortable enough to sleep, and at times the air conditioner cut out which made driving through dry 90-degree Brazil very uncomfortable. The 26 hour ride ended up taking 32 hours, and we stopped for over an hour at one point due to an overturned truck. Worst however, were the other people on the bus. Luckily Carmin and Brian were seated behind Tanner and I, so that was ok for us, but behind them in 2 seats was a family of 5, including one very large mother, another woman, and 3 satanic children. Throughout the ride I believe that crew comprised a total of about 3 separate puking incidents, none of which they bothered to even react to let alone clean up or notify anyone about. An impressive feat outdone only by the overly pudgy 6-7 year old girl who puked 4 times throughout the ride yet continued to be fed sweets and ice cream by her caring parents.

Yes, it sucked. It gets worse, but I don`t even want to remember it. All I know is that we were retched, angry, sleep-deprived people when we finally pulled into Salvador in the afternoon of the 22nd. Luckily we had the world`s largest and greatest party coming up in the week ahead to take out mind off of it.

And the most ironic thing of all? We found out later we could have done this entire trip in a plane, flying about 3 hours from Rio to Salvador, for a negligible difference in price, and possibly even cheaper. Grrr.
